Mysterious Origins

The history behind cornhole is shrouded in mystery, as there have been many variations of the game throughout the ages. Some say it originated in Germany. Others believe it came from the Native Americans who were rumored to have filled animal bladders with corn and tossed them into holes in the ground. In addition, lots of people in Ohio are positive that it originated in Cincinnati.

There are also lots of variations in the game. Some versions use multiple holes in the board, as well as the number of bags you are allowed to use.

In America, the game became popular in 1974 when Popular Mechanics Magazine released an article on how to make a cornhole board. Now, the official rules are more clear. You get 3 bags. A bag on the board is worth one point, a bag in the hole is worth 3 points. The first player or team to 21 or over wins.

Tossing bags filled with beans onto a raised angle board is now a common game used at many leisure events and backyard BBQ’s. The love for this game has spread throughout the Midwest and now even has a National Championships covered by ESPN. Yes, that’s right, we said National Cornhole Championships. Last year the American Cornhole League Singles Champion took home $20,000. We’re talking serious competition here.

National Cornhole Day Declared

All of this craze over maize inspired the declaration of National Cornhole Day. The idea came from Rocky Conteduca of the American Cornhole League in hopes that it would bring people together all across the country to play in unison. National Cornhole Day is to be celebrated on the last Saturday of every June.
